Life After the Oil Crash

(A lot of this is not my writing, but it's my take)

If you've been wondering why the Bush administration has been spending money, cutting social programs, and starting wars like there's no tomorrow, you may have your answer: as far as they are concerned, there is no tomorrow.

As one commentator recently observed, the reason our leaders are acting like desperados is because we have a desperate situation on our hands.

In 2003, the BBC filmed a three-part, relatively apolitical, documentary entitled "War for Oil" about the role the Bush administration's knowledge of Peak Oil played in their decision to invade and occupy Iraq. As the documentary explains, in private the Bush administration sees the war in Iraq as "a fight for survival." From a purely Machiavellian standpoint, they are probably correct in their thinking.

For what it's worth, Bush's Crawford ranch is completely off-the-grid and equipped with the latest in energy saving and renewable power systems. It has been described as an "environmentalist's dream home." The fact a man as steeped in the petroleum industry as Bush would own such a home should tell you something.

On a similar note, Dick Cheney's personal investments indicate he (or more accurately, whoever handles his money) is expecting economic collapse.

Neither Bush or Cheney (or really, any administration) can be honest with the American people about the severity of what is unfolding. If they were honest with the country, half the nation would refuse to believe them while the other half would likely panic.

Here is what I think is the ugly reality. Life After The Oil Crash.

An integral solution? Spiral Wizard Ben Levi from the Spiral Dynamics list writes:

  • Identifying ways to become much more efficient in how we generate and use energy;

  • Downshifting our energy consumption and tapping into alternative energy sources such as solar where we can;

  • Shifting our focus to becoming horticultural- based, where a significant % of the population (i.e. 20-25%) produces food for the rest (not just the 3% in the current agricultural/ energy-intensive model);

  • Designing everything in the spirit of "cradle-to-cradle" design, where everything is food for everything else (no more 'waste' to throw 'away', because there's no more 'away' anymore).
Get self-sufficient in terms of efficiency, food, transportation, and 'cradle-to-cradle' lifestyle. It's certainly going to take major change in all four quadrants to make this happen. Take care of your loved ones and build community.

Integral Warriors, Week 2, con't

Joe Perez, one of the members of Integral Warriors, posted this about his experience of how and why we wait to give our fullest gift. Joe is one of the most fearless and open men I know and I am proud to call him brother.

His powerful book, Soulfully Gay, is must reading for anyone interested in transformation.

Integral Warriors: Week 2

As I move through the process of facilitating the men's group, Integral Warriors: Embodying the New Masculine, based on David Deida's book, The Way of the Superior Man, every meeting, every moment, is a learning experience. I'm not going to be able to write about what some of those experiences are, as it might compromise our vow of only sharing our own experiences with others outside the group.

The problem with being the facilitator is that much of my experience is wrapped up in how others show up.

That eight other men showed up for a second week was truly remarkable to me. Part of being in a men's group is learning how to give whatever our gifts are to the world, and I seem to have a gift. An undeveloped gift, to be sure, but a gift nonetheless.

Last night, over an after SeattleIntegral meeting drink with several SI members, one of the men who is in the men's group was telling others around the table how it is that I hold space for these men, how my wisdom and brave example of opening and telling my truth led the way for others to feel safe in doing the same. Very much appreciated, but I'm by no means the only one doing that.

To me, it's amazing how quickly these nine men are bonding. I shouldn't be surprised. I've seen it happen in mixed groups where shared altered states create a quick, and firm, bond. I've just not seen it done with men. Also, most men who are moving into later-stage consciousness just aren't able to have these kind of open conversations that push our edges with the other men in their lives.

This creates more love and freedom for myself, these men, and the world. It moves us through our fear and allows all us to begin to actualize our personal gifts to the world.

I am honored and humbled to hold space for these remarkable, brave men.

Integral Warriors: Embodying the New Masculine, a men's group, Part two

This is a very different blog than I expected to write today. Judging by the early lack of enthusiasm around the concept of a SeattleIntegral men's group, I expected three, maybe four, men to show up at the first meeting last night. We had nine men show up and they seem to be exactly the right men.

Nine men! Nine brave men who all have powerful personal stories. Some came with a purpose, or mission, and some are not sure why they came, but feel called. I won't go into any personal stories, other than my own, if I feel it's relevant to a teaching or of possible value to others, and I won't mention the names of those who've shown up.
Some of the issues that came up are about purpose, addictions, relationship, money, forgiveness, self love, accountability, fear, trust, and what's holding us back?
For me, I know I need to be in the company of men. I need to hear the brutal truth about who I am and what I do, or don't do, from a masculine perspective. Like many men, I bathe and luxuriate in feminine energy, especially with my beloved (I've never met a woman who tells the truth so fearlessly and so compassionately as she). However, I also recognize that I've not paid enough attention to the polarity of the masculine in the company of men, and that's perspective I need to embrace. However good I might be at holding the Divine Masculine on my own, there's always a way to go deeper.
While aware of Jung's four archetypes used in other men's groups - the king, the magician, the warrior, the lover - and paying attention to the integration of all, the focus of those group will be David Deida's work, particularly around his book "The Way of the Superior Man."
I am also delighted at the chance to step deeper into my role as a spiritual teacher, and sharing the wisdom I've gained with other men, and learning from them as well. This is also not a free group. There is a small fee for each of the meetings. That's part of my commitment to be paid for the work I do, as well as the men's commitment to the value received for the time and effort I put in to facilitate and lead the group: part of my personal work around conscious abundance, as well.

Conscious Abundance?

Here's an interesting question and book I've ordered. It asks about consciousness and abundance. Can the two co-exist? I know a lot of people who don't think so. As with some aspects of stages of consciousness (particularly the Spiral Dynamics model), a person's current stage is defined by the "why" we do things. What's the value that motivates us?

I think it's the same with abundance. It's not that we have abundance, it's what we do with it. I also think OSHO owning over 100 Rolls Royces at one point is way over the top, and another reminder that even the greatest teachers (I love OSHO!) still have human frailties.

Even some authority/mythic level religions and churches are tapping into abundance as something we deserve. I'm beginning a program of conscious abundance and will be writing about it over the next few blogs, including blocks that prevent my conscious abundance. Part of this program is why I haven't been blogging. I'm back, again.

How to get rich: can rich people be transpersonal?

Can you be a first generation rich person and be 2nd/3rd Tier?

585 million pounds is roughly the net worth of Felix Dennis so one assumes he knows what he is talking about in his book How To Get Rich < http://www.amazon. co.uk/How-Get-Rich- Felix-Dennis/ dp/0091912652>;

Can rich people be transpersonal? Osho at the height of his success had over 100 Rolls Royces, Spirit Rock < http://www.spiritro ck.org/> Dharma teacher Jack Kornfeld
< http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/ Jack_Kornfield> is a millionaire. Geshe Micheal Roache's story is an interesting one. As a young western Tibetan Buddhist monk his Lama told him to work in business incognito and apply Buddhist principles to business, he chose the diamond business in the big apple, and did become very successful and single handedly supported the Sera May monastery. You can read his story in The Diamond Cutter: The Buddha on Managing Your Business < http://www.amazon. com/Diamond- Cutter-Buddha- Managing- Business/ dp/0385497911>

His short list of qualities (below) needed to get rich seem to me to show a combination of higher developmental traits as well as lower ones, he says apart from numeracy education is not relevant, although here in the UK one imagines a 'good' education with the connections for elite networking could be useful? As people move up the hierarchy of developmental needs to an
integral perspective, 2nd and 3rd tier spaces, can you still keep the predatory, plundering, pillaging qualities needed to become rich?

Maybe if like Felix Dennis you can keep it a game, take a one taste perspective, make subject object, not identify with it; disidentify echoing Krishna's advice to Arjuna on the Battlefield as related in the Mahabharata. Just before the battle at Kurukshetra, Arjuna sees that the enemies he's about to do battle with are his relatives, friends and teachers. Krishna, his charioteer, shows Arjuna a glimpse his of his non-dual true, unknowable form, and from that perspective higher up the mountain the contradictions resolve themselves, as Jung used to say. And of course the Samurai in Japan attained a high level in pursuit of excellence in combat, using similar
techniques as Eugen

"Now comes the hard part. Before we really get started on getting started, I ask you to consider carefully the short list below. It is by no means comprehensive, nor will it be the last list in this book, but should you find yourself unable to measure up to even one of these initial demands (and I mean just one), then my suggestion is that you close this book and give it to a friend, or an enemy

- depending on the degree to which you enjoy ironical gestures.

- If you are unwilling to fail, sometimes publicly, and even catastrophically, you stand very little chance of ever getting rich.

- If you care what the neighbors think, you will never get rich.

- If you cannot bear the thought of causing worry to your family, spouse, or lover while you plough a lonely, dangerous road rather than taking the safe option of a regular job, you will never get rich.

- If you have artistic inclinations and fear that the search for wealth will coarsen such talents or degrade them, you will never get rich. (Because your fear, in this instance, is well justified.)

- If you are not prepared to work longer hours than almost anyone you know, despite the jibes of colleagues and friends, you are unlikely to get rich.

- If you cannot convince yourself that you are 'good enough' to be rich, you will never get rich.

- If you cannot treat your quest to get rich as a game, you will never be rich.

- If you cannot face up to your fear of failure, you will never be rich."

"Trust your instincts. Do not be a slave to them, but when your instincts are screaming, Go! Go! Go! Then it's time for you to decide whether you really want to be rich or not. You cannot do this in a deliberate, considered manner. You can't get rich by painting by numbers. You can only
do it by becoming a predator, by waiting patiently, by remaining alert and constantly sniffing the air and by bringing massive, murderous force to bear upon your prey when you pounce."

Integral Warriors: Embodying the New Masculine

Why would I start an Integral Men's Group when there are plenty of men's groups already around (Sex, Passion, and Enlightenment - The Mankind Project)? Because they don't take specifically take a 4-quadrant/AQAL approach. We'll approach this group apllying Ken Wilber and David Deida's model. Starting in September, I hope to bring 6-10 men together to help each other discover what it means to embody the New Masculine from a second tier perspective. I also believe that this is some of the most important work that can be done today as we watch Patriarchy die kicking and screaming (see my previous three blogs).

What is a Men's group?

A men’s group is a group of men who meet regularly and are committed to the goals of learning to serve each other to deeper spiritual growth, keeping each other true to their deepest life’s purpose, and practicing giving their unique gifts to each other and the world. The teachings for this group will be based on the David Deida book, The Way of the Superior Man.

What will happen at Meetings?

Each meeting will follow a structured agenda of exercises with time included for giving each other feedback and encouragement in their practices of deep living based on the book The Way of the Superior Man and other teachings by David Deida. This group will determine our own logistics of meeting frequency and time.

Why should I join a Men's group?

Many men know how hard it is to follow through with deep, spiritual teachings in their everyday lives without any kind of support. Many have experienced the so called "rubber band effect" after attending a profound workshop or intensive. "Rubber-banding" is when you get stretched open beyond your normal boundaries in a challenging, or ecstatic situation, but then "snap back" to your more habitual patterns of behavior when you return to your everyday life. A men’s group provides a conscious community to support men’s continued growth of deep understanding and practice.

What will it cost, and what kind of commitment will be required?

Each member of the Men's group will be asked for a small donation at the meetings to help cover the cost and time of putting the meetings together. The time commitment will depend on how often the group will want to meet, but I recommend twice a month, and a commitment to attend twelve meetings except in the case of an emergency for Part I, and the first 6 chapters and 12 lessons will take place over those 12 meetings. Part II will complete coverage of the "A Man's Way" of the Superior Man.

Five reasons for a man to join a Men's Group:
Taken from "Way of the Superior Man", by David Deida

1) BEING IN THE COMPANY OF OTHER MEN
"A man discovers and fine tunes his purpose in solitude, in challenging situations, and in the company of other men who won’t settle for his bullshit. A mans capacity to receive another mans direct criticism is a measure of his capacity to receive masculine energy." Chap. 10

2) HAVING MEN HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE FOR LIVING YOUR DEEPEST PURPOSE
"Your mission is your priority, unless you know your mission and have aligned your life to it, your core will feel empty. Your presence in the world will be weakened, as will your presence with your intimate partner." Chap 30

3) MEN WHO ARE DEDICATED WITH YOU
"Be in the company of other men who are dedicated their lives to integrity, truth, and the heart. Men who are dedicated to live with an open heart and give their deepest gifts of love, mission and presence. The way a man penetrates the world should be the same way he penetrates his woman: not merely for personal gain or pleasure, but to magnify love, openness, and depth." Chap 9

4) SUPPORT YOUR EDGE WITH OTHER MEN
"Choose men friends who themselves are living at their edge, facing their fears and living just beyond them. Men of this kind can love you without protecting you from necessary confrontation with reality that your life involves." Chap 10

5) CUT THROUGH YOUR BS
"At least once a week, get together with your men friends to serve one another. Cut through the bullshit and talk with each other straight. Welcome such criticisms from your friends. Suggest challenges for each other to take on, in order to bring each other through the fears which limit your surrender in gifting." Chap 50

A Challenge to Wake Up

So why am I writing about 9/11 conspiracy theories, not-so-secret plans for world domination by the military industrial complex, etc., etc.? All you have to do is look at history to thoroughly support "so what's new?" Things simply have not changed that much, and still the majority of us aren't conscious enough to know or care. We have our drugs of choice, happily supplied by those who would dominate us.

I left "religion" at twelve. I could not reconcile myth and science, and no one in my circle was talking about myth as allegory, only as fundamentalist truths with no room for questions, which I could not accept. I wandered for years as an atheist at first (my only option), and later as as agnostic. It wasn't until a few years ago that I became aware of something bigger than I. Call it "Spirit," the Universe, collective consciousness, or even God, as long as it isn't dualistic.

My own sense is that Spirit, The Universe (my preferred words of choice), is a collective consciousness that we're all connected to. Not just people, but a collective consciousness that encompasses the entire universe, which includes us. I believe (a belief that cannot be proven) that the entire Kosmos is conscious and that we're able to somehow tap into that with practice, attention, intention, and our own consciousness. If we're a part of the all, then that makes perfect sense.
We just have to learn to listen.
Believing that, I've been experimenting with Dialoging with Spirit: Conversations with God, if you will, different from petitionary prayer, and little irreverent. I think Spirit has a sense of humor. After all, could Spirit possibly embed a quality into creation that it didn't already posess? It's talking to Spirit, me, and everyone else at the same time. After all....how are we different?
I've had two recent experiences where I believe Spirit has directly spoken to me, something I would have laughed at years ago. One was when Anyaa and I were fretting about whether we'd get something we really wanted and it looked like it was going south on us. Through meditation and dialog, I asked the Universe (and me, and the collective unconscious) to give me a clue. That night I startled awake from a dream where I was told, "Gary, I only do the big things, not the little ones."
I immediately called and woke up Anyaa, 2700 miles away in North Carolina, to tell her of my dream. The message was clear to us both that if our desire did not pan out it was because there was a bigger picture yet to be revealed and that we should just relax into what was to be, and we did - and the worry was gone.
My second experience happened last Saturday, during a Shamanic Breathwork journey (see my earlier posts on this amazing process!), in the form of a vision. In that vision, my disembodied self flew into the Kosmos, hooked up with Spirit as light, and we danced across galaxies, solar systems, Magellan clouds, and universes....The Universe showed me an infinite number of worlds in an infinite universe, where conscious beings were struggling to survive. Some with consciousness just struggling out of the primordial mud, some far advanced from us, some at he same tipping point which determines our survival as a planet.
The Universe/Spirit explained to me that every planet that holds consciousness must go through exactly what we're going through, now. This time in every planet's development decides whether we are worthy of taking the next evolutionary step into a shared Universal Kosmic Consciousness, or whether we commit planetcide. It was further explained that many intelligences do not survive this time, and the planet is left to begin anew, because life, consciousness itself, always pushes on, always emerges, with, or without, us.

The choice is ours, and that's why I'm writing about this stuff. In good conscience (and good consciousness) I can stay silent no longer, I must speak out.
And I believe that if you're conscious, and not asleep, or drugged, that you must also speak out. We must create the disorienting dilemmas that cause people to question and wake up.
Hurry....there's not much time left.

Zeitgeist: more.....

I watched the History Channel's debunking of the 911 conspiracy last night, mostly based on Popular Mechanic magazine's 14-page cover article which attacks skepticism about the government and media explanation of the 9/11/01 attack.

The primary method of the piece is to build and attack a straw man of myths it claims are "at the root of virtually every 9/11 alternative scenario" embraced by the "growing army of conspiracy theorists." PM selects a combination of 16 valid, erroneous, and inconsequential claims found on websites, implying that they are all endorsed by the "army" of skeptics.

Before anyone jumps down my throat for being a conspiracy "nut," they should read 911review.com's Mainstream Press Attacks page contains an expose' of connections between the Hearst Corporation -- owner of Popular Mechanics -- and the CIA. You should also check out the 911Research critique of the Popular Mechanics article, Popular Mechanics Attacks its '9/11 Lies' Straw Man, focuses on how the article avoids addressing the charges of 9/11 Truth activists, and the OilEmpire.us Bogus 9/11 websites page which has long debunked about half the 16 claims that PM dishonestly identifies with 9/11 Truth.
Check it out. Decide for your self.
What does this have to do with integral? Integral consciousness demands that we look at the truth as the authority rather than the authority as the truth.

"Zeitgeist" and Why We Need to Step It Up!

You think you're free? You might want to think again.

I've been aware for a couple of decades about some of the things talked about in this movie that threaten our freedom, and, yes, even our ability to publicly remain open conscious beings, but never have I seen it all brought together, including new information I didn't know, in such a powerful way. YouTube has apparently pulled it down once, so who knows how long it will remain up.

If only half of what is said here is true, it means that we "light warriors" need to really up our ante and our connections with each other, helping to spread the concept of "one" planet, one consciousness.

You can watch all five parts of this must-see movie for free on YouTube here

Don't take the film as the truth, but find out for yourselves, for truth is not told, it is realized.

More on the film.

Pass it around.

A Total Failure

By any accounting, the Bush Presidency is a total failure. Hoping to become the modern-day equivalency of the McKinley administration that ushered in years of Republican governance, it has, instead, turned into the Hoover administration, which was brought down by the 1929 stock market crash...only insert the Iraq war. Both were unnecessarily brought on by stupidity and greed.

Karl Rove's exit is the latest benchmark of the abject failure of this administration. Does anyone believe Rove, the last of the Texas home-grown contingency, would be leaving if their goal of creating a one-party super-majority dynasty had been successful?

Other failures:
  • The War in Iraq: need I say more?
  • The "war on terror" or whatever they're calling it this week: Feel safer?
  • The privatization of Social Security
  • The Valerie Plame scandal
  • Numerous Republican convictions
  • Loss of standing in the world community
  • Record budget deficits
  • Increasing political partisanship and divisiveness in Washington.
  • Further erosion of the middle class, begun by Reagan, fostered by Clinton, and continuing today
The first clue to the public's awareness of abject failure was the loss of the House and the Senate to the Democrats in '06. It just gets worse, now with Congress beginning to issue subpoenas...that is, if they have the balls, or aren't complicit themselves.

The entire 6-1/2 years of this administration's reign has been a textbook ad about why politicians need to take a more integral and balanced approach to problem solving and politics: The politics of divisiveness, "us vs. them," and "either you're with us or you're against us" just does not work. Unfortunately, there aren't any stars on the left (or the right) who seem to get that concept, either. Maybe Obama and Edwards, but I have serious doubts about either of them being able to go all the way.

So, goodbye Karl Rove. Don't let the doorknob hit ya where the dog should have bit ya. Good riddance.

Oh, the decades it will take to repair the damage done by these fools.......and the damage they are still capable of....

Yes, the picture is a fake....just wishful thinking and what he deserves.

America's Falling apart...and For Sale

There can be no doubt that America is falling apart.

Witness what happened in the last few days in Minneapolis with collapse of a major bridge and a still rising death toll. It should be no surprise. The American Society of Civil Engineers warned in a report two years ago that between 2000 and 2003, more than 27 per cent of the nation's almost 600,000 bridges were rated as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. But that's not the only indication of an aging infrastructure. Consider the following:
  • An underground steam pipe explosion in NYC on July 18th. "There is no reason to believe whatsoever that this is anything other than a failure of our infrastructure," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference at the scene of the blast.
  • The New York blackout of 2003. a massive collapse of electrical service over 240,o00 square kilometers of the US and Canada.
  • Two years ago we saw the virtual destruction of a major American city, New Orleans, in Hurricane Katrina, and still remains as a monument to our inability to respond.
  • The state of our roads, once the pride of world in post-war America, now crumbling, our transportation systems, including airlines and airports, our nation teetering under a crush of commuter traffic.
  • Drinking water, the food supply, the air we breathe....

The irony here is that Minnesota Twins have postponed its groundbreaking for a new stadium -- being built with public dollars. According to Minnesota Public Radio, "...Twins owner Carl Pohlad will pay $130 million towards the stadium. But the plan also requires a Hennepin County sales tax of .15 percent. The tax finances the remaining three quarters of the ballpark's $522 million cost."

Maybe it's that infrastructure just isn't sexy. Who cares about bridges and roads and sewers. Ballparks are fun, power lines are dull.

But the fact is that these dull things are the things that we all rely on. And, if we keep up with this idiotic idea that tax cuts are always good, we're going to watch it all crumble around us. You've got to pay for this stuff and, at both the states and federal levels, we're not. You can't run a nation the size of the US on the cheap. Like everything else in the world, you get what you pay for. And if you pay jack, you get jack.

And you can't blame the government....we are the government, even when we forfeit our responsibility. You get what you pay for...in every way.

Maybe we should just have a garage sale......

Gratitude

On a cue taken from my friend Bill at Integral Options Cafe, I also like to express gratitude on a daily basis. When together, Anyaa and I almost always end the day falling asleep to the numerous things we're grateful about in our lives, especially each other and the many blessings of our relationship. I consider expresing gratitude part of my integral practices.

As a result of my move this weekend into a new house,
I'm also grateful for these views from my living room.

Dangers of a Cornered George Bush - Coleen Rowley

In an earlier blog yesterday I suggested we send "ping pong" balls to Congress and the Senate to help them stand up to this administration. I also argued for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney lest they do even more damage than they've already done, claiming that just starting the process would force mobilzation and awareness that the legislative branch is now able to ignore....at our peril.

On the Huffington Post, Coleen Rowley writes about the Dangers of a Cornered George Bush. The possible scenarios again scream for the necessity of impeachment to begin.

"If the constitutional process of impeachment is under way when President Bush orders our military to begin a war against Iran, there is a good chance that, rather than salute like automatons and start World War III, our senior military would find a way to prevent more carnage until such time as the representatives of the people in the House have spoken. This administration's capacity for mischief would not end until conviction in the Senate. But initiating the impeachment process appears to be the only way to launch a shot across the bow of this particular ship of state. For it is captained by a president with a psychological makeup likely to lead to new misadventures likely to end in a ship wreck unless the Constitution is brought alongside and a new pilot boarded."

"George W. Bush is without conscience, and it would require a lengthy series of clinical sessions to find out what happened to it. By identifying himself as all good and on the side of right, he has been able to vanquish any guilt, any sense of doing wrong."

The Search For A New Worldview

From the Big Bang to Big Brain, here is a modern creation story, an inspirational starting point for embracing conscious participation in the evolutionary partnership of our time. At the comtemporary edge of human consciousness, we must be co-evolutionary partners.

The scientific revolution of the past century has brought about nothing less than a new perception of our reality, a new worldview. This means all of us are at some stage of changing the way we look at, think about and understand business, politics, nature, religion, values, health care, education, families, communities and everyday life. It’s a big change in a very short time. Books like “Dark Age Ahead” and “Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed” all ask what our response to this will be. Will we fight it all the way with possible dire consequences? Or will we embrace this change of fundamental perspective, and in so doing create the future we want and need?

Such scale of change can be met proactively or blind-side us. The challenge ahead is to reinvent ourselves, our economies, our institutions, our communities as ecologically sustainable, economically viable, equitable and inclusive. There are people already working for this in every community. But their numbers are not yet enough to tip the public will. The number who recognize the need is not too small. But those acting upon it are a minority.

Send Some Balls to Congress

While listening to Big Ed Schulz on Air America radio this afternoon, a caller offered a brilliant idea on how to get Congress to stand up to this administration: shame and humiliation (I love it). Nothing else has worked.....

Go down to a sporting goods store and buy four sets of two ping pong balls, one set for your Representative in Congress, one set for your Senator, one set for Senator Chuck Schumer, and one set for Nancy Pelosi. Stick two of 'em in a 5-7 padded mailing pouch, and send them off to these people with a note reading: "Since you seem to have lost your balls, I thought you could use these. Time to stand up to this administration and say 'no more' ."
I have not been a fan of impeachment as I thought it would do more harm to the country than good. I've changed my mind. The potential harm this administration could do by it's "F*** you" attitude to us and the world could be much, much worse.
If you laugh this off, do I need to send you a set, too?

Something You Can Do....Right Now

A hundred years from now, school children will read about Al Gore and his leadership to address global climate change.

No one has worked harder or inspired more Americans to tackle the greatest threat the world has ever faced. Now it's time to add your name to the history books.
Stand with Al and pledge to live a life that will protect our environment for generations to come. Don't do it because you're a Dmocrat. Don't not do it because you're a Republican.
Do it because it's the moral and ethical thing to do.
Do it here.

Moving Forward

(Click on image to see it full size)

I'm not blogging enough, and I know it. Life. Life is in the way. I've got so much going on that someting has to give a bit, and yet, I know how important blogging anfd writing is to my practices....my integral practices. So what's been in the way?

Well, regular readers know about Big Love Integral, the Workshop on Conscious Romantic Relationship that I'm continuing to put together, and present as I go. I also moved this past weekend. Yes, I moved twice last year, and I loved the apartment I've been in for the past year, but an oppoprtunity came up (shall I say manifested?) to rent/sit a great house for a friend at a great price. In the Magnolia neighborhood, it boasts a view of Elliott Bay, the waterfront, the city, the Space Needle, and even Mt. Rainier on a clear day, and is only a 3-minute drive to my regular job. But moving, as I wrote last year, is a bitch, and it's taken three weeks to do that.

In addition, my lady Anyaa and I are buying an investment property, and I've been putting that deal together and we're making an offer this week. We've also started an online travel business, called World Ventures, where people can find the lowest fares, dream vacations, become a travel agent themselves with all the discounts and perks afforded travel agents, and allows us to write off all our travel and vacations.

Then there's the iboutique, my free lance design , the seminars and trips to expand my consciousness, putting together a new Breathwork Group in Seattle, SeattleIntegral, and my long distance relationship with my Beloved, Anyaa.

Phew....I've got to find some time to do some more blogging!

More Love, Less Suffering

MY BELOVED left Seattle this afternoon after spending 30 days here with me. For those of you who haven't read of Anyaa in this blog before (you must really be new!), she lives in North Carolina, and we've been in serious face-to-face relationship for 9 months, and began speaking on the phone for hours at a time 2 months before that.

This has been made possible because Anyaa facilitates The Shamanic Priestess Process (TM) all over the country and was just beginning a 9-month circle in Portland when she called me in, and I found her, thanks to an online dating site. We'll officially be at one year on August 30th. A milestone. She's now beginning a Seattle circle which will keep her coming back to Seattle for that period of time, maybe more.

What an amazing journey this has been with this amazingly conscious woman. I've never been in a relationship like this before, and she feels the same. The things we've manifested together during this 11 month period, starting with each other, are a wonder, and continue to unfold almost daily.

Already awakening in my own path, this relationship has kicked my consciousness into high gear, challenging me, calling me on my stuff - sometimes lovingly, sometimes brutally, read David Deida's The Way of the Superior Man - teaching me to compassionately receive not only love, but criticism, all the while keeping my heart open with having to defend myself or become defensive.

It continues to teach me about all the things I talk about in Big Love Integral: engulfment, abandonment, core wounds, opening - and to keep opening - my heart, all the relationship practices, expressing and releasing, how it all fits within an integral context, and much, much More.

I know....the title of this post, More Love, Less Suffering, is easy when things are going great, and much harder when it's not happening. But what that's about is, as Anyaa left this afternoon, I found myself not suffering, even though she won't be back for three weeks, when we'll get to spend another 10 days together, deepening once more. I'm not suffering because, as our love continues to deepen and keeps going to new unimaginable levels, I don't doubt.

Perfect....my own relationship inspires me to deeper and deeper levels with my Big Love workshop. Pure manifestation. This is my intent. This is my reality.

Big Love Integral: Module....er....Workshop 3

This last Saturday I presented Module 3 of Big Love Integral, the Workshop on Conscious Romantic Relationship in an Integral Context....except I no longer want to call them modules, as suggested by my friend Kent Layden, in Portland: A "Module" implies that you need the other modules to understand the current one. Not true. Each is an "event" unto itself.

Nowhere was that more obvious than this weekend's event, aptly titled, "Open Heart Practices: Getting ready for Big Love." This was such a powerful module/event that it truly could stand on its own as an all-day workshop. The entire day was about all these amazing practices that lay one's heart wide open.

The guided practices I'm teaching, which include my own meditation called Big Love, the Relationship Meditation (no surprise, huh?), involves discovering the truth about your relationship, and how you know this other soul. I also include Tonglen, the Buddhist compassion meditation, guided imagery, Focusing and Felt Sense, and Soul Linking.

I'm focusing on these practices because I believe that the development of empathy and compassion is the single most important step in developing conscious relationship. In the upper left quadrants, one of the reasons we meditate and engage in spiritual practices is to increase the chances of interior development (necessary, but not sufficient)...in the lower left quadrant, the practice is to develop empathy (again, necessary but not sufficient).

Empathy is not an emotional activity: it's an intellectual activity (the cognitive leads). The cognitive is necessary for the ability to take multiple perspectives, and until we can do that, we can't develop empathy across the board. In other words, I have to be able to to think what it's like to to be you! Once I can do that, my emotions, and my empathy, will follow.

The miracle of Conscious Relationship can only happen if we both empathize with each other, and unless it flows both ways, there can be no conscious intimacy.

One realization I've had around relationship is that you will only get the relationship you're ready for. If you haven't done your work, and really understand who you are (in other words, not fully conscious and awake), you're only going to call in a relationship that reflects your current consciousness, stage, or altitude. Someone who is at later stage consciousness is not going to be challenged by you, and you're going to be bored with someone who doesn't meet you where you're at.

We can only call in what we're ready to receive.

Some comments from the weekend:

"I felt powerful connection with spirit both in vertical and horizontal dimensions."

"I liked the experiential quality. After you've talked about what an apple tastes like, it's good to eat an apple."

"I feel like I have some tools for personal growth around relationship."
"

This process facilitated the shift I was ready to make, was very moving, and helped change my life patterns to fall in to a higher resonance."

Thank you all for showing up, not only for the workshop, but for yourselves.

Is Your Ego Your Enemy or Your Friend?

The dialogue between Ken Wilber and Andrew Cohen on Women's Enlightenment in the latest issue of What is Enlightenment, and my and Anyaa's take on it, has stirred a lot of conversation on the SeattleIntegral list. With about even support and disagreement on our postings, it's good that a discussion has ensued, for there have been a lot of really excellent points from both perspectives.
Anyaa and I are sticking to our perspectives, but opting out of the discussions for the most part, as we've said most of what we want to say on the subject....except to make one last point that goes beyond the WIE article and what I think is its masculine perspective at the exclusion of the Divine Feminine.

Isn't it interesting that people who would never think of killing anything else think that killing the ego is so important?
And why is it important to kill the ego? Isn't killing the ego an act of ego? There are many traditions that recommend killing the ego, but to me it sometimes looks as if those who are calling the loudest for the ego to die, have the biggest egos, suggesting it's your ego that needs to die, mine's just fine, thank you.
The laughable part of this is that you can't kill the ego. It's impossible.
My new friends and teachers, Diamond and River Jameson, from the Total Integration Institute, have a better idea: Make friends with your ego. It's a valuable tool that, when befriended, allows us to be more fully integrated in our felt sense body experiences during this existence, rather than living the masculine approach of Eros without the integrated being of the feminine Agape.
This is the really important stuff: Each of us, male or female, BGLT, whatever, can only live a fully integrated life if we learn to embody both the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine in our being. Enlightenment is not masculine. Nor is it feminine. It's not emptiness. It's not fullness.
It's all of the above, integrated into our human experience as fully and complete as humanly possible. It is "multi-dimensional whole being and Integration."

Who's Reading Me, Now?

I was commenting half jokingly tonight to Anyaa that it wasn't necessary that she send a letter to the Editor of What is Enlightenment magazine: Her blog (and mine) would be on their desks within a couple of days. I was wrong. Both were apparently reviewed heavily this afternoon by someone at WIE.

How do I know? Site meter told me.

Right after I posted this blog earlier today, someone from WIE spent about 35 minutes at my blog and viewed six pages, and then out-linked to Anyaa's blog, apparently to read what she had written.

No surprise. My hope is that this will spark a conversation that will ultimately lead to a deeper understanding of what is enlightenment.

On another note:

I'll be gone for a few days. Anyaa and I are headed for Zion, Utah to spend four days doing a Total Integration Institute seminar, with Diamond and River Jameson, on Whole Being Conscious Evolution, another approach to living an integral life (my words).

Is George Bush Crazy?

Bill at Integral Options Cafe offers a funny video suggesting just that!

A "What is Enlightenment" Catastrophe

In the latest issue of "What is Enlightenment," Andrew Cohen and Ken talk about enlightenment for women and how they have to get past and give up their sexual (feminine) power in order to become enlightened.

Andrew's approach is a total disaster, replete with an unbelievable reductionist view and total confusion and lack of understanding in the difference between "woman" and "the Feminine," and disappointingly, Ken does not correct him, but merely places what Andrew is saying into an integral context (to his credit, he does this very well).
Andrew totally fails to recognize any understanding that there might be different approaches to enlightenment. Before you protest, he's basically saying that the only approach is the masculine, that a feminine approach doesn't work, and that women have to drop the feminine in order to become enlightened. He does not ask that men drop the masculine to do the same.
He also claims to have been working on breaking through with this approach for 12 years and that he has finally cracked the code. Could that have anything to do with the fact that he's a man? Perhaps not in every case, but in this one, my answer is a definite "yes."
Women have been successfully doing this work for over thirty years. Too bad Andrew's ego wouldn't allow him to work with some of them as a student, instead of doing a spiritual bypasss himself, having his women students do the same, not by integrating the feminine, but by transcending and excluding it. This is like "enlightened" fundamantalism.
I'm talking to a lot of conscious women who are outraged by Andrew's audacity and I share that outrage. What a shame!
See my partner Anyaa McAndrew's blog on the same subject.

For Anyaa.....

There is only emptiness without you
you bring form to my world
you manifest your being
and therefore manifest mine
It's not that you complete me
You are me
and I am you
I breathe in the knowledge
that you have changed me
and my life....

Module 3, Big Love Integral

Greetings, fellow Conscious Lovers!
Did you know you don't have to be in a relationship to be a Conscious Lover? It's true! By opening your heart to the world and the universe, you invite in conscious love, and with intention, perhaps even a future beloved (I've done this!)
And in the third Big Love Integral workshop module coming up on Saturday, July 14th (click the attached image or go to www.bigloveintegral.com), we're going to explore several practices that can help you open your heart to the possibilities found in conscious relationship.
Whether you want to invite love into your life, improve an existing relationship, either with yourself or another, or just (just?) learn how to feel deeper compassion and empathy, you won't want to miss this module. We'll be diving deeply into states of non-ordinary consciousness through guided imagery, Tonglen, and other practices, including one I've developed around Big Love.
It's only $75 per person for the all day event (we're still at introductory prices), so invite a friend and plan on attending. Attendance at prior modules not required, but helpful, and as always, RSVPs are appreciated (prepay and get a 15% discount!)

Extinction: Are we running out of time?

Call of Life: Facing the 6th Mass Extinction event.

Big Love Integral Relationship Models Compared

In the work I'm doing developing and presenting my new workshop, Big Love Integral, Conscious Romantic Relationship in an Integral Context, I've developed a chart to compare six different relationship models so we can see how they compare to each other.

Like most models of consciousness from developmental psychologists, this chart clearly shows that different people measure different things, yet all are important, and all have a piece of the puzzle. And, as Ken Wilber says, no one has the whole truth. This is consciousness wrapped up in relationship, and when it comes to exposing where we need work, either as individuals. couples, or societies, nothing kicks our ass like love and relationship.

Relationship exposes every childhood wound, every shadow, every shortcoming, every fear, every thing. And the more conscious we are, the more we can see it. Fortunately, the good news is, once we see it, we have an opportunity to make friends with what we see. It isn't easy, but seeing and getting these shadows, wounds, etc., in a cognitive manner -- Again, as Wilber says, the cognitive leads -- is the first step in turning the subjective into the objective, or lessening their hold on us and our relationship.

My own fears of abandonment from my core wounds are still there, but now I can see them for what they are when they come up for me. Instead of fearing my partner is pulling back, I can now see my own role, realizing it's my issue, not hers. In doing this, I also free her from her core wounds of engulfment, or feeling smothered.

All of the models shown on the chart, with the exception of Spiral Dynamics, are about individuals and couples in relationship. Spiral Dynamics, is about values in relationship, and the various stages that both people and societies move through. In the United States, where I live, our societal center of gravity centers around Blue and Orange, hence, our natural tendencies toward rule of law, divine authority, absolutism (blue), achievement, merit, and materialism (orange). Over the last 50 years, we've seen the effect of relativistic post-modernism (green) upon relationship. Most has been good (being equal is better than male domination or partners as status symbols), some bad (50% divorce rate). Not all would agree post-modernism has been good, and again, they would be partially right. But personally, I'd rather live in later stage consciousness even with it's problems.

Spiral Dynamics -- as a relationship model -- in Module 2 was the largest, and by far, most interesting of the models. Since only a small part of American culture has reached Green, it may still be too early to tell what effect this post-modernism may ultimately have on relationship.

One thing is clear, Integral relationship, or relationship at the integral stage of consciousness, is still only a blip on the horizon.

A Developmental Relationship Model Around Core Wounds

A Developmental Relationship Model by Anyaa T. McAndrew and Gary Stamper

(Some of the following text was Adapted from John Welwood's Journey of the Heart. The model was developed by Anyaa and Gary in conversation around Big Love Integral, the workshop on Conscious Relationship in an Integral Context.)

People often choose a partner with a script that is the mirror reversal of their own. Thus a person with a fear of engulfment will pair up with someone who has a fear of abandonment. Whenever her fear comes up, she creates distance. This in turn brings up his fear, which makes him grab at her, further activating her fear of engulfment. "Pressing each other's buttons" in this way, they become polarized in mutually antagonistic positions that threaten to drive them apart. As they say, "It was a match made in heaven," but quite opposite to what the phrase intended. Karma throws us together to work through the challenges of this relationship dynamic.

His father had been emotionally distant, and this had made him distrustful that a woman could ever be there for him. Thus he regards her need for solitude and "her own space" as a constant threat. He is always wary that she might be on the verge of leaving him, and repeatedly seeks proof that she really loves him. She, on the other hand, becomes suspicious whenever men express their affection too ardently or demand hers in return. Her father had turned to his daughter to fill his emotional needs. Feeling overwhelmed by her father's needs, and lacking protection from her father, she had learned to protect herself by keeping a safe distance from him.

So when he approaches her out of his abandonment panic, she becomes claustrophobic and goes into an engulfment panic. She cannot understand his urgency unless he was, like her father, out to eat her alive. And he cannot understand why she is so unwilling to give him what he needs unless she was, like his father, distant, punishing, and cold. Their fights, underneath all their convoluted tangles, has a single theme: "You're abandoning me." . . . "No, you're engulfing me." . . .This dynamic repeats with millions of couples.

In her conflict with him, she is in pain about feeling engulfed by his need for loving contact. When she opens to this pain, it connects her with a deep wound from her past: her conflicted feelings about needing to be an individual in her own right. Although she will blame him for not letting her have her own space, the truth is that she does not really feel entitled to it. This is because of her guilt about having to push away her father in order to be herself. . . .

In a similar way, by exploring the pain he feels in chasing after her, he contacts his old wound - his conflicted feelings about needing love. Because he had felt so unfulfilled as a child, part of him had come to believe that he is unworthy of love. Before he can make friends with his need for loving contact, he too has to become aware of his critic, who says, "You're so needy - what's wrong with you?" . . .These insights require a penetrating look at the shadow from which the behavior comes.

This is Stage One of the Model we've developed around Core Wounds: The Distancer and the Pursuer. The Pursuer is the one who chases the other, generally to "capture" or own them, for it is only through completely owning the other that the Pursuer feels safe. The Distancer, on the other hand, is the one who runs, who needs to avoid capture to maintain the freedom they didn't get as a result of their core wounds. All of this is done completely unconsciously at this stage.

These core wounds aren't necessarily childhood events, but , rather, can occur at any time in one's life.

Stage Two of the Core Wounds Model is all about Merge and Separation. These aren't so much identities for one another as they are a description as to what happens in the relationship. At this stage, when the couple comes together, they tend to lose their individual selves (hence, the merge) in each other. They want to be close, but the core wounds that still exist and which haven't been addressed, pull them apart, and they engage in conflict to unconsciously create distance and space. There's much more to this, but it is also where make-up sex occurs. It's an unconscious dance.

As they make friends with their needs, they no longer feel compelled to project their fears. No longer seeing each as oppressors, they can begin to communicate what they are actually experiencing in their conflicts. When he simply says "I'm feeling abandoned and scared right now," she becomes less defensive. And when she says, "I'm feeling overwhelmed and put on the spot," this disarms him. . . .

The final healing of the rift between he and she happens as they come to recognize, through working on themselves, that both these needs - to be strong individuals and to be close to each other - belong equally to each of them. As he comes to accept his need for love, he can discover why it has always been so hard to feel: It brings up his terror of being left alone. He had hated his aloneness as a child because it was associated with deprivation, which had felt like a threat to his survival. By relating to his inner child in a caring way and educating him to the present situation - that being alone is no longer a threat to his survival - he loosens the hold that his old abandonment stories have on him. .

Through their struggles he and she have learned a powerful, essential lesson: that relationship, rather than being just a form of togetherness, is a ceaseless flowing back and forth between joining and separating, Stage Three of the Core Wounds model, or Integration and Differentiation. Just as the moon begins to wane at the peak of its fullness and the tide ebbs at the height of its flux, so after moments of intense connecting two partners naturally begin to fall back into their aloneness. And in moments when they feel most separate, a desire is born to come together again. The health of a relationship depends on both partners being able to move freely back and forth between these two poles.

This is a key discovery for every relationship. We often imagine that having our own space in a relationship is the opposite of being intimate. Yet actually the reverse is true, and this is the key point: Space is what allows intimacy to happen. It enables two people to meet and touch freshly, to "see each other whole and against a wide sky," as Rilke put it. Rilke's lover concurred when she wrote, "Two are one only when they remain two." The electricity in a couple's erotic connection flows most freely when they are not entangled, but rather feel themselves as two distinct, separate poles, man and woman.

However, more than just polarity, in this space and in the differentiation, each partner is able to gather new experiences and learnings to bring back to the relationship to keep it, and them, interesting, vital, and ever growing and changing through integration back into the one, a more indivisible whole.

An Individual Couple’s Journey Through Development via Spiral Dynamics

Yesterday I presented the second module of my Big Love Integral workshop. There are six modules to the workshop, as this is a very big subject: "Conscious Romantic Relationship in an Integral Context."

The second module is all about relationship as it fits into various developmental models with the biggest emphasis on Spiral Dynamics Integral. After we had finished going over the model and what relationship looked like in each of the seven vMemes (value memes, or levels of development based on values), I was asked to layout a specific relationship as it progressed through the spiral.

Because I'm certainly most familiar with my own relationship, it was an obvious choice (Anyaa and I have an agreement that we can use our relationship as teaching moments, and we pretty much let it all hang out....with much love and respect, of course!).

So here's how I see our relationship as it moved from the earliest survival moments into where I think it is today. As we progressed from a first email to today’s flex and flow of co-creation, our relationship has clearly gone through developmental stages, just as individuals and civilizations do.

Not all of the traits of each of these Value Memes (vMemes) show up, because we are, after all, happening in a modern context and from our own developmental perspectives. Still, aspects of these stages have definitely been present.

Beige, Basic Survival: We talked on the phone for two months, always deciding if we wanted to continue the long-distance conversation. Some close calls. Distance was, and still is, the hardest factor.

Purple, Tribal: Some feeling of magic around the relationship begins to develop. “The Universe brought us together.” Rituals begin forming. Recreational sex.

Red, Power, Ego: It didn’t take long for us to hit a power struggle in our relationship over keeping commitments. Because we brought later stage consciousness to it, we sailed through fairly easily.

Blue, Authoritarian, Rule of Law: We begin to set up how we do things. Who does what? What’s okay in the relationship, what’s not? Bring order and stability. A sense of responsibility toward each other.

Orange, Materialistic, Achiever: We want to have the best relationship possible. You are an amazing partner and you bring out the best in me (partner as status). The intersubjective “we” begins to develop internal values of its own.

Green, Egalitarianism, Equality: We are equals, 50/50 relationship (Deida’s Stage 2), we share some responsibilities, particularly around financial arrangements because of our long distance relationship status. Also a sense of “All We Need Is Love” tries to creep in.

Yellow, Existential, Systemic: Co-creation, we create and take responsibility for our own relationship and its evolution. We see the big picture of a shared higher purpose, and ease into chaos, change, flex and flow. Recreational sex still exists, but there's also a sense of co-creational sex (procreational sex was never really an option for us!).

I have absolutely no idea what relationship, looks like at Turquoise and beyond, but I very much hope to bring that perspective to you one day, as I think we've both got one foot in it!

Big Love Integral, Module 2

If you're in Seattle, or close by, and you don't already have plans, Saturday is Module 2 of my developing workshop, Big Love Integral, A Participatory Exploration of Conscious Romantic Relationship In An Integral Context.

In this module, we'll start out with a meditation designed to help you improve your relationship or to call one in, some practices designed to get out of our heads and to open our hearts to possibilities and the learning space, and developmental models such as David Deida, Lawrence Kohlberg, Harville Hendrix, Robert Kegan, and a very special tour of Spiral Dynamics and meme-equivalents in relationship. We'll spend some time on typologies, primarily the Enneagram and MBTI.

This is a great context in which to further your understanding of the broad integral approach!

I'll also unveil my own developmental model around our Core Wounds and how they affect our relationships, and we'll talk about relationship and love from an Integral Perspective through the work of Jean Gebser.

Plus, we'll have a great time! Hope to see you there!

For info on time and location, go here .

Big Love, all,

Gary

Not Too Much Flak...or notice....

One of my best friends, whom I love dearly, and I sometimes disagree around the political landscape. In an email to the SeattleIntegral list, where I also published my thoughts on the the Homeland Security Presidential Directive, he asked if I thought publishing a doctored photo of (then Governor) George Bush giving the finger on camera was a bit too much.

Actually, it's a real still frame taken from this video, and you can see for yourself who this sophomoric person really is, and in my opinion, remains. That's not to say he's stupid, or isn't a threat to our freedom and the constitution. In his defense, we've all done things in a joking manner that shouldn't haunt us all our lives.

I can certainly see that different people will look at the same information and come up with different interpretations. Plus, we're all going to fiercely attempt to hold on to our beliefs, no matter what...including me.

Cognitive Bias: 26 Reasons What You Think is Right is Wrong

Still, I prefer to remain vigilant and be wrong, than to not be vigilant and be right. Especially with this administration' s record.

Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! :)

Last, I believe the reason today's neo-cons are so bad at government is because they don't believe in government. Their goal is to dismantle every public program and turn it over to private enterprise. From Reagan, and continuing with Bush II, they have no awareness of what this country was built upon: the commons. Without the commons, we'll be a corporatacracy, and I believe that unfettered path is leading the human race down a path of global extinction.
